Can I wear a formal big wedding dress to an afternoon ceremony and reception?

I am concerned if we do an early ceremony followed by an afternoon brunch that I cannot wear a super fancy formal wedding gown.

My sourthern sorority ettiquite tells me that afternoons call for tea-length and that floor length is relegated to the evening.

Help, I want a pretty formal long gown. So I wanted an evening reception.

But fiance wants an afternoon reception since we are doing it on a Sunday.
We are having a French theme and rented out a beautiful fancy formal French restaurant with gorgeous gardens. It is definitely a gorgeous and upscale.

Should I wear tights with my short dress for my formal dance?

The dance is a formal party at night.
I have a hand me down dress that’s a little short on me (mid thigh) because I’m pretty tall (5’7”).
It’s a metallic very dark purple dress with a bubble skirt.

Would it be weird if I wore some black tights under it?
I’m probably wearing black heels.

So I’m going to this formal sweet sixteen in january and I need some help finding a dress. The theme is black and white or something but I’m supposed to wear a black and white dress.
