Durable alternatives to diamond rings?
I’m a ways from getting engaged, but I was talking to my boyfriend about rings recently and he expressed a desire to avoid diamonds (for a number of reasons including the fact that they are too common and he’d like to be a little more unique- this is no strike against being more mainstream, just a personal preference).
I am fine with this, but does anyone have any suggestions for unique ring ideas that are still somewhat traditional (ie would not easily be mistaken for just a simple ring I happened to put on that morning) but have unique qualities and avoid diamonds (and preferably the synthetic stones)?
I did see thumbprint rings on offbeat bride and I think they’re really cool, but maybe not feminine enough for me (I’m fairly traditional). Anything similarly unique but a little more wedding-ring-like?
Oh, I forgot to add that durability is VERY important to me. I’d prefer to have a stone in the engagement ring, but it better be one (like a diamond) that isn’t prone to chipping.

How to photograph diamond rings?
Hey
I’ve been trying for months to get decent photos of my white gold diamond rings. I’m currently using a 40cm light tent, with two daylight bulbs on the outside (105w – the massive ones). The problem i’m faced with is that I want a pure white background on the photos, but the white gold/diamond seems to merge with the background.. i’m aiming to get photos like:

yet I can only get something like this:
(that is before any editing in photoshop to get the background whiter, using curves etc..)
the picture then ends up losing clarity and blending with the background.. ive tried changing the levels but to no avail.. is there anything wrong with the photo or equipment setup?
i’m using a dslr nikon d50 with a macro lens and tripod. f/32 and different shutter speeds with lowest iso and manual focus..
any help would be appreciated (but please dont link me to obvious google searches as ive tried them endlessly)

my sister’s the professional so i’ve never really learned anything about it… i mean, we all just let my sister do it, ha ha… but just from looking at your picture… it looks like you need better lighting and a macro setting or something. like on portrait photos, they have the bright lights right behind the camera to give the eyes a twinkle, you need bright light.

do you think it is okay for girls to wear diamond rings from their boyfriends before they get marry or should it be taken a little more seriously?
And my gf keeps on bringing up the fact that her ex bought her a diamond ring and she wore it(however, she told me she threw it away after they broke up), I am not all that satisfied to hear this, if she is willing to wear a diamond ring from someone, yet, dumps him so easily, I highly doubt her understanding of love.
Recently, she’s been saying that we should get the couple rings, and how it symbolize love and all that….with all her previous “glorious” histories, I am not sure if I should give in on this ring thing. What do you think?
