How do I connect my dvd player to my wall-mounted plasma tv, w/ directv receiver?
My house is new construction so I had the cables run behind the walls from the tv, which is mounted above the fireplace, to custom-built cabinets, on either side of the fireplace, which hold my dvd player and directv receiver. The cables that I have to work w/ are both being used by the directv receiver. So is there any way I can hook the dvd player up through the receiver?
Based on emails, here’s our Top Ten Answers for you:
Hey Ashley R,
no there is no way you can connect the dvd player with the receiver. the best thing to do would be to connect the dvd player in the back dvd player to the tv and connect the direct receiver to the back of the vcr

How to hook up a DVD player to an old TV with no ports?
I have an older RCA TV that does not have the required ports to hook up a DVD player. I’ve done a little bit of research, and from what I understand, I need an RF modulator. But I checked the one port that my TV does have, and it has “external speaker” printed below it. Will an RF modulator work with that port? Is there something else I should be buying in order to hook my DVD player up?
Based on emails, here’s our Top Ten Answers for you:
Hey ,
The “external speaker” connector on your TV is only for connecting a speaker that will work in addition to the TV’s built in speaker, so it won’t help with what you need to do.
You do need an RF modulator, plus the cables to connect that to your DVD player and TV. The cables you need depend on what kind of modulator you get, and what kind of connections your DVD player has.
For connecting the RF modulator to your DVD player, you probably will have 2 choices for cables:
- Composite AV cable, which has yellow, red, and white plugs at each end. The yellow is for video and the red and white is found sound.
- S-Video cable which has a round black connector with little pins inside, plus a stereo audio cable with red and white plugs at each end.
If you have a choice, the S-video cable might give you a slightly better picture.
For connecting the RF modulator to your TV, you will need an “F” coaxial cable, this is a thicker cable with a round connector with a single pin in the middle on each end.
Once you have the cables, the instructions for the RF modulator will tell you what else you need to do.
(another idea would be if you could find a digital TV converter box that also had AV inputs – I am not sure if such a thing exists, but if it does, it would do what an RF modulator does, plus it would tune in digital TV channels if you hooked up an antenna to it).
