Diamond Rings User Questions

What is the best place to buy a diamond ring? In and near Seattle, WA?

The price variations at shops is huge for similar rings and that worries me. I need an authentic place which offers the right price.

Based on emails, here’s our Top Ten Answers for you:

Hey Akash M,
Some general advice, regardless of where you buy:

Do your research. Don’t just buy something because it looks pretty in the store’s ideal lighting. Understand “The 4 C’s”, and why one “Cut” is often way better quality than another. If you don’t know what a “hearts & arrows” cut is, and why it looks that way, then don’t go shopping until you do (part of why prices are different for seemingly comparable stones is buried in those 4 C’s, so it pays to understand them).

Avoid mall stores and other chain outlets. Invariably the prices are too high, and the lifetime cleaning guarantees they offer are nowhere near worth the extra cost.

Avoid “diamond districts”. The inventory often comes from an unreliable source. A few bad apples in this barrel will spoil it for everyone else.

Avoid places where you have to “take a number” to see a representative to view loose stones. I live in Southern California, and yes, there is a place like this in Tustin.

Respectable mom-and-pop places will usually have good deals. If they have a vault with a decent collection of loose stones, that’s a good sign. Another good sign is that you have to make an appointment to see them.

You could avoid buying in Seattle altogether: Internet-based outlets like mondera.com, bluenile.com and diamonds.com are highly reputable, and they have an excellent selection of stones of all shapes, sizes, and grades. Even if you don’t buy there, their prices are a very good indicator of what you should expect your local store to offer in price. If a comparable stone in a local shop is much more expensive, run the other way. If a comparable stone in a local shop is much _less_ expensive, run the other way, only a lot faster.

The other advantage to buying on-line is that most retailers are in New York, and you won’t take a sales-tax hit for interstate transaction in Seattle. For a $ 5000 rock, that’s $ 300 savings right off the top.

That’s most of it. You’ll figure out the rest as you go. Armed with more knowledge will help you get the best rock for your buck. Good luck.

What does “replacement value” mean on the certificate for a diamond ring?

How is this related to the ring’s purchase price or current value?
I’m trying to figure out what a ring with a ring with a $ 2500 replacement value might be worth if I sell it to a pawn shop or on ebay. I’m just trying to get a BALLPARK ESTIMATE.

Based on emails, here’s our Top Ten Answers for you:

Hey kathleenjohnson,
In the jewelry world it means just that the cost to replace the item at a full retail price at today’s values. Replacement values are often also insurance values. They are not reflective or wholesale, resale, or necessarily sale prices.

It will honestly be worth twenty to twenty five percent of the retail price at best. So at 2500 retail or replacement value you are looking at about 600 dollars or less at a pawn shop.

The retailers on gold and diamond generally market up merchandise 300 to 400 percent. A pawn shop or wholesale buyer is buying based on the wholesale price only.
