How do I hook my surround sound system to a basic DVD player?

Right now, I have my surround sound system hooked up to my Xbox 360… but that doesn’t play my burned discs… but my really cheap DVD player reads them… how do I hook up the surround system to the DVD player, do I need a fancy cord? the Xbox came with the cord and all I had to do was plug it in, this is now getting way too complicated for me to figure out. any suggestions would be appreciated, and if you need me to elaborate…. tell me what you need to know.
it is a boston digital surround sound set and a panisonic DVD-S1 player.
where do I get these cables, radio shack?

Based on emails, here’s our Top Ten Answers for you:

Hey limp noodle,
If you are just playing burned DVD’s, then you can connect RCA cables (red and white) from the output of the DVD player to the input of the receiver.

If you are looking for digital surround sound from movies, you will need a digital cable, coax or optical. If the DVD player is cheap, you might just have coax.

Radio Shack or any other electronic store will have av cables, you only need 2 connectors, red and white, not 3 (red, white and yellow).

I wasn’t able to find boston digital, could the receiver be a Boston Acoustic, and if so what model #? if you still need help

How do you program Directv DVR remote to control a Sanyo dvd player?

I have a Directv DVR white remote and it will turn on/off the dvd player but the function buttons don’t work. What am I doing wrong?

Based on emails, here’s our Top Ten Answers for you:

Hey C.R. B,
Hi! You can try the following steps to reprogram your DirecTV remote control to your Sanyo DVD player…

1. First, make sure your DVD player is turned on. After that, slide the mode switch at the top of your remote to AV1.

2. Press and hold the MUTE and SELECT button at the same time until the green light flashes twice.

3. Enter this code: 20873 (The green light on the remote should flash twice.)

4. Aim the remote control to your DVD player and press the PWR button once. This should turn off the DVD player.

If the first code doesn’t work, you can repeat steps 1-3 and enter any of these codes: 20695, 20670.

I hope this will help reprogram your remote…

If I connect our DVD player to our TV with a YPbPr cable, will audio be sent to the TV?

Or will I need a separate red-white audio cable?
Same for an S-video cord, does that carry only video?

Based on emails, here’s our Top Ten Answers for you:

Hey allhailzeppelin,
Both the YpbPr cable (component) and S-Video cables only are for video, so you will still also need the red/white audio cable.

But if your TV and DVD have HDMI, that’s best of all – the quality will be better than S-Video and as good as (or better than) component, and you won’t need a separate audio cable.
