How can I tell if a widescreen DVD is properly formatted for a progressive scan DVD player?
I have a Sony progressive scan DVD player hooked up to a DLP TV with component cables (blue green red kind). When hooked up this way, it does not just “zoom in” on a letterbox movie to fit the wide screen. Certain wide screen movies, usually cheaper DVDs or older films, arent formatted properly. They seem to be full screen movies in letterbox rather than widescreen, and so when I put my TV on wide mode, it merely stretches the letterbox version side to side rather than properly adjusting it to the screen. Is there any way to tell by the information on the package that this will happen? It is incredibly disappointing to buy a DVD and have this happen.

Not all movies are going to fit your TV properly. If the movie is 16×9 it will fit your TV properly. Also if it close the DVD can be stored anamorphically, allowing it to stretch automatically to fit your TV. However, sources that are wider than 16:9, such as 1.85:1 or 2.39:1 video, must still be letterboxed into the 16:9 frame with varying amounts of black bars(though not as big as the black bars on a 4×3 TV) It depends on how the movie was shot.
