At 4MP it is pretty much obsolete. That being said, if all you want is a camera that will do photos for email and internet use or small prints, you could get by with it. Digital cameras obsolesce quickly.

I am looking to buy a new digital camera and don’t know where to start in looking for one. Preferably I would like something small and somewhat thin since I plan to carry it around a lot while traveling. When you buy a compact digital camera you want to look at it’s optical zoom and digital zoom capabilities. Optical zoom is actual zoom such as a microscope or telescope can zoom in and retain original image quality, digital on the other hand is computer software that inflates the pixels when you zoom in, which decreases the image quality and clearness. For example 2x optical zoom to 4x optical zoom provides 100 times better image quality when zoomed in on a certain object 10 times 10 for each difference, 2x digital zoom to 4x digital zoom just tells you how far the camera can zoom and estimate what an object “should” look like, but it’s usually bad picture unless you are very close with digital. For scenery or football games, etc, optical zoom all the way, try to stay somewhere at 6x optical zoom or above.

I am shopping for a new camera and would like to be able to produce the “blurry background” effect, which is achieved with a wide aperture. I am moving on from a Canon SD600, which I really like, and has made me biased towards Canon. What is the least expensive camera in Canon or otherwise that can produce this effect?

Look for a P&S that has aperture or shutter speed priority modes
Look on dpreview dot com. They have a search engine where you can plug in your required features.
The problem you will have is P&S cameras have such small sensors, getting good Bokeh is nearly impossible.
You may have to buy an inexpensive used DSLR and an appropriate lens
