Healthwise are sports sandals that strap on securely better for you in the long run than flip flops?

Sandals such as Tevas or Nike Straprunner with the velcro security, do they have better support and likely to do less damage to your feet than say $ 4 Old Navy flip flops?

What are those sandals that all of those preps are wearing?

I’m not sure if it’s the same for everyone, but all of the (supposedly) “preps” wear these, somewhat gladiator looking slippers, except they’re more like flip flops. My niece has been wanting these slippers, but honestly, I have NO CLUE what she is talking about. She has just pointed them out at the mall or restaurant, but hasn’t told me the brand. If someone could tell me what it is before the 24th, it would be greatly appreciated! (it’s for a birthday present)
